What will a runway show look like in ten years?
I attended the Margiela couture show in January and there were 100 edited seats of
front row facing the runway. It was all the most famous editors and fashion
influencers. I believe the runway may become more exclusive like this show,
while the digital access will make it more inclusive with clothes going direct to
consumer and access to buy immediately after the show concludes.
How have you seen the image of a model change over the past ten years?
At IMG Models, we are moving into the era of diversity and inclusion. We are
signing talent and creating a roster that reflects the population. We are focusing
on all races, ages, genders, and sizes. We are helping build the careers of a
new generation of stars such as Ashley Graham, Jillian Mercado and Hari Nef. We still represent “traditionally beautiful” models such as Gigi Hadid, Karlie
Kloss and Joan Smalls, but we are simultaneously redefining the term “model.”
What would you tell a model starting his or her career?
The same thing I have said to a potential model my entire career: This is not a
business to focus on glamour if you are the muse. You need to be an inspiration
to a designer, editor, or customer, and if you are not up for the long hours,
endless travel and inability to keep a regular schedule, you should chose another
career. If you want to remain in fashion, find an opportunity where the effort and
focus is not all on you.
What is NYFW like for Ivan Bart?
HECTIC! From managing the team at IMG Models, and putting out fires (such as scheduling conflicts for in-demand talent), to seeing shows, networking backstage and front of house and discovering new opportunities. NYFW especially consists of running to several events, dinners, and parties. It begins early morning and tends to go into the wee hours of the night. My mantra: Take a nap and start again. This schedule goes until the last ensemble comes down the runway. I always look forward to the weekend after, when I may not emerge from my bed. I then take a rest and move on to Europe!
Where is the next emerging global fashion market?
On your device!
Is it easier or harder to break into the modeling industry nowadays?
I think it's easier now that we have @WeLoveYourGenes, our Instagram scouting campaign. Any aspiring model can hashtag #WLYG and we may discover and sign him or her to IMG Models. The digital era has given us the ability to scout globally from our office!
How has social media shifted the landscape for models?
Models can now participate in their own promotion. They’re becoming their own brands and legitimate stars with unique voices. Before the rise of social media, one needed a manager to sell who you are and to open doors. You still need a manager to negotiate the best deal and be an advocate, but the power of a model's voice has never been stronger due to the technology.

Crowning achievement in your career?
This very moment in time - helping elevate the conversation around what is considered beautiful and fashionable - is my crowning achievement. It's not just one thing anymore. It's a diverse array of interesting influencers. I have never felt more motivated and excited to move into an era where we might finally see ourselves reflected on runways, television commercials and magazine covers!
