7 is a showcase of work by the seventh graduating year from the MFA Fashion Design and Society program at Parsons School of Design, a highly selective program for talented, emerging designers that was initiated through the support of alumna Donna Karan.
The MFA Fashion Design and Society is the first graduate program of its kind in the United States. Both interdisciplinary and international in scope, this academy for advanced studies in fashion design trains a small cadre of world-class designers to have a global understanding of fashion. Innovative and progressive, the Fashion Design and Society program offers students the opportunity to make substantive contributions—both professional and conceptual—to the field of fashion design. Aiming to bridge the gap between industry and education, the MFA program reframes fashion design education within the context of the global world. The program is studio-based and fosters experimentation, providing students with the design and research skills they need to become successful in the field, including a critical awareness for self-development and growth.
Central to the pedagogy of the program is the engagement of visiting professional practitioners such as photographers, art directors, artists, curators, choreographers and business consultants, who bring their own expertise and experience highlighting the collaborative strength of the program. The Program focuses on the designers, research process, highlighting their personal identity, and is evidenced through a body of work integrating both highly executed innovative clothing and textiles, and supported by extensive research materials.
In addition to working for top companies, other MFA graduates have gone on to start their own businesses and include: NIHL (MFA ’17) Kozaburo (MFA ’16), Janhkoy (MFA ’16), Snow Xue Gao (MFA’16), LANDLORD (Ryohei Kawanishi MFA ’15), Matthew Adam Dolan (MFA ’14), Andrea Jiapei Li (MFA ’14), Melitta Baumeister (MFA ’13) and AREA (MFA ’12 / MFA ’13).
Designers have won or placed as finalists for the LVMH Design Prize, Swarovski and Vogue Talent New Generation Award, International Woolmark Prize, International Talent Support (ITS), VFiles, and the H&M Awards.
