i-am-chen is an all-knitwear label that strives to bring a fun and light-hearted spirit to its audience. In today’s fashion world obsessed with imposing solemn concepts on clothing, designer Zhi Chen turns to the playfulness and cheerfulness embodied by the art- works of Alexander Calder and David Hockney.
i-am-chen's designer, Zhi Chen started university as an engineering student, but quickly switched to pursue her dream in design. She started learning to draw as a complete beginner and managed to get in Donghua University’s Fashion Design program. After she finished university, Chen was awarded a national scholarship to study at the Parsons School of Design, and continued her study at the London College of Fashion. In 2017, Chen graduated from the master’s program with distinction at LCF.
Since i-am-chen was established in 2017, Zhi Chen has recieved signigicant international recognition including, the 2018/2019 International Woolmark Prize, Business Potential Award by Shanghai Fashion Week 2018, and was commissioned by the MoMA to participate in the 2018 exhibition, "Items: Is Fashion Modern?"
SONGTA conceives each collection as an art collection by utilizing curatorial and social engaged art to design clothing. SONGTA interprets runway, showroom, and e-commerce platform as “Art Museum,” and transforms the brand's official flagship store as “Solo Show,” and boutique store as “Group Show.”
Luxury and fashion industry have always prone to collaborate with art. They use contemporary art as design elements, fabric exploitation, crossover campaign, and pop-up show. SONGTA’s fashion theory is to convert contemporary art into fashion through its own ideology and culture confidence, and contemporary artists should convert themselves into fashion designers and luxury brands to truly bring revolutionary influence to the industry. SONGTA break the stereotype of most independent designers by opening brand official flagship store in the first year. Furthermore, the house established the department of art curate and incorporate fashion with art on body, visual, and space.
